Unit Four: Printmaking
Printmaking is a very old and very popular form of artwork. While there are many different styles of prints, the idea of making multiples of an image is something that became very important in art history very early on. With today's high tech culture it is very easy to duplicate almost any image, however, we will look at some of the more low tech and classical techniques that artists have used to make multiple images. We will explore the work of Andy Warhol, an artist who took screen printing to a whole new level and inspired the pop art movement. By the end of this unit you should have a better appreciation for the process of print making and be able to crete prints of your own using Styrofoam printing plates.

Task Two: An Introduction to Andy Warhol
Please watch the video provided below and be prepared to answer questions in class.
Task Three: Styrofoam Printmaking
In class we will be creating a series of prints using styrofoam printing plates. This process is very much like that of a linoleum cut print; however, instead of cutting away the areas we want to appear as passive space we will use pressure to create indentations into the styrofoam. Once the image is pressed into the styrofoam, students can roll ink onto their printing plates and transfer their images to paper. For this project I am asking that the students create a final project that includes their image to be duplicated a minimum of three times. While you can draw any animal or plant for this project; some compositions will work better than others. Because of this, please have your concept sketch approved by the teacher before moving onto your styrofoam plate. The other requirements for this assignment are outlined in the grading rubric provided below.
