Unit Three: Tessellations
In this unit we will explore the close connection between art and math by looking at the creation of tessellations and the artwork of M.C. Escher. By the end of this unit you should have a better understanding of how math can help strengthen our work as artists and you will also have created some beautiful and unique tesselations in the style of M.C. Escher.
Task One: What is a Tessellation ?
Review the "What is a tessellation?" section of the Tessellation Exploration website. You will be introduced to important facts and techniques associated with tessellations. Please make sure to read thoroughly, watch all provided videos, and answer all questions.
Task Two: Who is M.C. Escher ?
Review the "Who is M.C. Escher?" section of the Tessellation Exploration website. In this section you will be introduced to the life and work of the artist M.C. Escher. You will also be required to complete an artist critique on one of M.C Escher's artworks from the National Gallery of Art.
Task Three: How Can I Create Tessellations ?
Complete the "How Can I Create Tessellations?" portions of the Tessellation Exploration website. In this section you will be able to watch a video on how to create your own tessellation stencil. After you have seen this video, I would like you to use the materials provided in class to follow the same steps that are outlined in the video and create a tessellation of your own. I would also like you to uses the two digital tessellation creators provided on this site to create your own unique tessellations that can be printed and added to your sketchbook.
