The units presented below represent part of the possible material we may cover in this class . The order and required assignments will be communicated to students in class . If we are unable to complete a portion of the materials available please feel free to use materials to enhance your understanding and exploration of the arts. However grades will only be given for work that has been assigned .
In this first unit we will get our feet wet by exploring some basic techniques and vocabulary. During this unit you will complete a variety of tasks that will not only help prepare you for future classes but also introduce you to the elements and principles of art. You will learn the basic rules and procedures for using supplies in Mrs. Crosby-Boerma's classroom and begin to work in your sketchbook.
In this unit you will explore the elements of form, space and texture and how they can be used to enhance your drawing abilities. You will also get to take a hands-on look at the fascinating career of architecture and learn about one of the world's most renowned architects: Frank Lloyd Wright.

In this unit we will explore the close connection between art and math by looking at the creation of tessellations and the artwork of M.C. Escher. By the end of this unit you should have a better understanding of how math can help strengthen our work as artists and you will also have created some beautiful and unique tesselations in the style of M.C. Escher.
Printmaking is a very old and very popular form of artwork. While there are many different styles of prints, the idea of making multiples of an image is something that became very important in art history very early on. With today's high tech culture it is very easy to duplicate almost any image, however, we will look at some of the more low tech and classical techniques that artists have used to make multiple images. We will explore the work of Andy Warhol, an artist who took screen printing to a whole new level and inspired the pop art movement. By the end of this unit you should have a better appreciation for the process of print making and be able to crete prints of your own using Styrofoam printing plates.
In this unit we will explore the art of watercolor painting. We will learn several different techniques that professional watercolor artist use to create special visual effects in their artwork. For the final project in this unit we will explore the creation of landscapes by producing unique postcards about our dream vacation destinations. At the end of this lesson, you will have a better understanding of watercolors and have a handle on how watercolors can be used to capture beautiful locations around the world!
This unit will explore the process of writing a comic book page. We will take an in depth look at how different cultures create cartoon characters and the steps artists move through to create a comic book page. At the conclusion of this lesson, each student will create a comic book page about a unique character of their own design.
In this unit, students will work in teams to create stop-motion animation films. By creating these Claymation films; students will be able to create a unique character of their own design before coming together as a group to build sets and develop a story line. Using digital cameras and Windows Movie Maker students will compile individually shot frames into short films which will be premiered on the last day of class.
This unit explores aboriginal dot paintings. We will learn about the Australian native's culture and how they beautifully blend story telling and art. We will use unconventional painting materials and symbols to create dot paintings that tell interesting stories about a wide variety of animals. You will also take your final formative assessment for this class and be able to compare your results to those from unit one to see just how much growth you've made this year as an artist.
This unit requires the completion of three activities that will help to evaluate what you have learned in this art class. You will create a final art project focused on demonstrating the elements of art, complete a written reflection using your portfolio as an aid, and finally, presenting to the class your favorite art project from this semester.
